Widescreen vs. "short" screen
Dont let the name "wide" screen fool you. There's no extra width in a widescreen. The picture is bigger but the field of vision is the same that you would get on a regular 4:3 monitor, which is 70 degrees by default ("normal view") and up to a maximum of 90 degrees ("wide view").
In fact, you get less in the vertical visibility and the exact same horizontal field of vision.
Maybe it could be fixed with a mod: making the central 4:3 'square' of a widescreen monitor display the game as it would be on a regular monitor, and add the 2 side 'slices' as FoV degrees... I wnder if it can be done (but even if it is possible, I have no idea how to do it)
I understand why they did it, bigger images at a higher resolution means that the pictures look great. However, from a gamer point of view, field of vision is more important than image size (not mentioning that images would be bigger anyway, as some of those monitors are way 'taller' than the biggest available 4:3. Now, I guess that on a lot of games you can decide by yourself whether you want the bigger images or the greater FoV, but in IL2 the only option you have is the one that not only doesn't give you back any of your peripheral vision, but also takes away another little bit, from the up-down direction.
The solution?
Triple Head of course.
Sure, it costs money... the Triple Head box itself costs some 250/300 USD depending on where you buy it, that's not so bad, but the problem is that you need three monitors. If you manage to get a good deal on the monitors it isnt so expensive after all. And it's totally awesome (sure, the big pictures of the "wide" screen look much better but the field of vision that you get with Triple head gives you back some (not all) of your peripheral vision, making the flight sim experience much more enjoyable
The only drawback of the Triple Head is that once you try it, you'll never be able to fly a PC flight sim without it.
